Sandvik | Future-proofing a global workforce through language skills

Overview

Sandvik is a world-leading engineering group, operating in more than 60 countries with tens of thousands of employees. To remain competitive and innovative, Sandvik places diversity, communication, and collaboration at the heart of its culture. Yet with a workforce spread across the globe, differences in language proficiency presented a barrier to knowledge-sharing, efficiency, and career development.

Since 2015, EF Corporate Learning has partnered with Sandvik to provide tailored language training programs that empower employees to communicate effectively, unlock new opportunities, and drive innovation. Now celebrating a decade of collaboration, the partnership stands as a milestone in supporting almost 6,000 employees to build skills that strengthen both their careers and Sandvik’s global collaboration.

The Challenge

Building communication skills to strengthen global collaboration

Sandvik’s mission is advancing the world through engineering. Innovation thrives on collaboration, and collaboration relies on clear communication. With teams in every region of the world, Sandvik needed to ensure employees could confidently connect with customers, colleagues, and stakeholders in English.

The company’s leaders recognized that without stronger language skills, employees risked facing miscommunications and limited career progression. At the same time, Sandvik needed a program that could scale globally and support diverse schedules and roles.

“Winning together requires good communication and collaboration, and there languages and language skills are very, very important.”

– Björn Axelsson, Executive Vice President and Head of HR

Our Solution

Flexible, data-driven language training tailored to Sandvik’s needs

EF Corporate Learning worked with Sandvik to design a scalable program combining teacher-led English classes, self-paced modules, and cutting-edge AI solutions. Employees can access flexible, personalized training that adapts to their role and schedule, ensuring learning fits naturally into their daily work.

The program is highly tailored, employees can select modules and classes aligned with their responsibilities and goals, while teachers adapt lessons to individual needs. The platform allows for training to take place anytime and anywhere, making it accessible across Sandvik’s global network. At the same time, AI tools support real-time assessment and safe practice environments, giving learners direct feedback and accelerating their confidence.

Another key element of the solution is its data-driven approach. It begins with large-scale ongoing assessment of employees’ training needs utilizing cutting-edge, AI-powered testing. For a comprehensive project overview, Sandvik receives detailed insights into participation, progress, and ROI, enabling leaders to make informed talent decisions and measure business impact. Importantly, EF Corporate Learning and Sandvik have evolved the program together over the past decade, building a true partnership where solutions continue to develop in line with the company’s needs.

“EF is continuously developing what they are offering Sandvik to make sure it suits Sandvik’s needs. And that for me is a true partnership.”

– Karin Bååthe, Regional CEO EMEA, Division Ground Support

Our impact

Driving innovation, efficiency, and career development across Sandvik

The partnership has had a significant impact. Almost 6,000 employees across 60 countries have benefited from the training to date, with more than 1,200 new course starts and over 22,300 study hours recorded in just the last two years. Learners consistently surpass expectations, with an average EF level improvement of 1.2 compared to the target of 1.0, demonstrating meaningful and measurable progress.

For employees, the training has had a transformative effect. Survey feedback shows that 91% would like to continue studying with EF if given the opportunity, while 92% agree that the program is a worthwhile investment in their career. In addition, 89% feel more confident using English as a direct result of their studies, and 93% report saving at least an hour each week thanks to greater efficiency in communication. Beyond the numbers, employees are noticeably more confident, curious, and willing to take on projects that would previously have felt out of reach.

“People are speaking up, they are more curious, they are actually taking on the assignments that they perhaps would not have been able to before.”
